چکیده

During the past 7 years we have had the opportunity of studying 27 cases of a condition characterized by multiple calcification of hyaline and fibrous cartilage both of the joints and of the intervertebral disks.* We present in this paper a detailed nosographical analysis of this clinical entity which we have named articular chondrocalcinosis (AC). Up to 1955, when we saw our first cases, we found a few reports in the medical literature describing altogether fifteen cases with calcification of the articular cartilage. Since 1955 reports on a further seventeen cases have been published.+ All the 32 cases so far reported are summarized in Table I (opposite). Personal Observations

[Chondrocalcinosis and hypomagnesemia: clinical and radiological progression].

Hypomagnesemia is a rare secundary metabolic disorder associated with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate cristal deposition disease in joint structures and may cause asymptomatic chondrocalcinosis (linear calcification of cartilage), pseudogout, and chronic arthropathy. We report 2 young men with relapsing acute knee monoarthritis with chondrocalcinosis and hypomagnesemia. After follow-up clinical...

Destructive arthropathy in chondrocalcinosis articularis.

It is now well recognized that idiopathic chondrocalcinosis articularis, as well as being associated with acute episodes of pyrophosphate arthropathy, may lead to premature degenerative changes in the joints involved. Some workers have also made occasional reference to the presence of juxta-articular osteolytic lesions (McCarty, Kohn, and Faires, 1962; Currey, 1970.) More recently there have be...

Pyrophosphate arthropathy--recent clinical advances.

It is now 20 years since McCarty et al. identified calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals in synovial fluid from patients with acute arthritis and radiological chondrocalcinosis.' CPPD crystals were subsequently shown to be inflammatory both in vivo and in vitro2 and their causal role in joint disease, reflected by the term 'CPPD crystal-induced synovitis', was readily accepted. Cadave...

New knowledge of chondrocalcinosis.

There are three varieties of cartilage-hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage. Hyaline cartilage is the precursor of bone. In the adult it is mainly found at bone ends, forming the load-bearing surface of synovial joints. Extra-articular fibrocartilages such as those of the trachea and ribs often calcify with advancing age. Articular cartilage, however, usually remains free from mineral deposits....
